Stub Wall Finish Adjacent to fiberglass Tub/Shower Unit

I am a serious DIYer, hung about 3 houses of drywall and taped myself. I have a 2x4 wall that closes in the end of a 5' fiberglass tub/shower. I'm using metal corner bead, wrapping around the 2x4. Do I need to install a piece of drywall on the 3.5" flat of the 2x4, or can I just put the corner bead around the edges and mud over the corner bead; will the mud adhere to the 2x4?

you can NOT mud over wood. it WILL spider crack. rock goes on then the corner bead. make rock pieces the same size as stud. dont hang over the end of the other rock. that just causes problems. to cut skinny strips of rock, and not break it up, cut plenty on both sides of it then nail on gently. also never ever hang over tub flanges either. lol

you dont want sheetrock all the way out to corner because corner bead wont set on it correctly.(it can rock on that outer corner instead of laying flat to wall as intended) let the bead make the corner not the sheetrock.

the reason you dont hang over tub flange is the rock wont be flat to wall. it gives you kicked out crooked corners above tub you clearly see. i still see hangers doing it these days though. you would think something so obviously wrong would get corrected. lmao (you can hang over flange if you shim entire wall though)

i have seen paneling sealed up and skimmed. it spider web cracked in 2 years. it was a basement and prone to humidity changes.

Not surprised, if / when i do it it usually around a door opening in an old house where wood is a backer for trim next to plaster. So its about 1.5- 2 inch under bead (no coat). Bit hard to explain.
