Remodeling an older home and during the demo phase, when pulling off 4' x 8' sheets of paneling, we revealed sheetrock that could be finished (taped / mud). The issue is occasionally they used glue/adhesive to to adhere the paneling to the drywall. The glue is old enough it scrapes off with ease, however it does leave residue on the drywall. What product can we use to ensure the drywall mud adheres to the areas that may have glue? Is there some type of recommended product to apply on the glued areas prior to finishing the drywall. Would basic wall primer suffice? I just want to make sure the mud bonds on the drywall in those areas that have been compromised with glue.

Thank you!
