I need to close this up as the light fixture that I will be using has a small base that nearly covers the box.

I tried hot mud and paper tape but it sagged and I just took it down as I wasn't confident that it would hold up.

So if I use hot mud and go with a stiff consistency, once dried and sanded flat I still have to tape and mud / feather out and finish yes?

Or can I just got mud sand flat and do a final coat or 2 with no tape?

I have a way to fix it as well, so cut a 7 inch by 7 inch square, use some wood and frame along the edges screw the drywall into the wood. Then get a new piece of drywall cut the exact shape of your light fixture and push drywall into place then screw it in. Now you need to finish the new drywall patch instead of the edges of the light fixture. A lot more work but it's a different way to fix this. Haha

As said above, fill with hot mud. Then use 6 inch piece of fibafuse and go over entire opening. After final coat dries. Cut out the box opening with a sharp knife. Wear gloves when handling the white fibafuse, some guys get itchy fingers.
