Can Venetian Plaster be textured over, or does it have to be removed?

I am in the middle of a remodel. The house interior has been completely drywalled and painted. However, the drywaller applied a smooth, shiny finish even though I clearly stated I wanted a textured wall. I think this is called Venetian plaster. I've also heard it called Santa Fe. Anyway, it looks ridiculous in a 1960's ranch style split level, so it cannot remain. My house looks like Barbie's beach house with these walls. But what do we have to do? The walls and ceiling have all been painted, but we still need to apply knockdown texture on the ceiling and a light orange peel on the walls. Can we shoot texture over the painted walls, or do we have to remove the fresh paint and the 300 pounds of skimcoat that was applied?

Many thanks.

i have heard that you dont paint it at all. never had to mess with it in my 35+yrs. but, if your walls have been painted then you can texture them.

WTF? Venetian plaster goes for about $10-$15 per square foot applied. So I think you would know it if you had it. WTF is Santa Fe? Use the proper terminology or give us a photograph. Then a professional such as myself can answer the question.

Maybe a Professional would know what Santa-Fe texture is.
It is a texture know in the Southwest, USA it is also called Adobe texture. So the term Santa-Fe texture is a correct term used in the Plaster & Stucco trade.

Thanks. I am a professional. Adobe has clay, sand, and straw. Is that what you have? It looks nothing like Venetian Plaster.

Adobe is also a type of finish coating.
Santa-Fe is a type of finish coating.
Venetian is a type of Plaster coating Venetian is many thin layers of a Plaster coating.
I have used a Venetian plaster product for very many years if you follow the manufactures data if is applied & troweled smooth, I have also used it to apply a texture it may not be cost effective but it works.
The OP says he wants to spray orange peel over his venetian plaster. But maybe it's not Venetian plaster, maybe it's Santa Fe texture. But maybe it's not Santa Fe texture maybe it's Adobe.

What ever plaster was used on his walls if the correct plaster product is selected than he can texture over the painted surface.
