Working as a contractor comes with its own unique set of challenges and requirements. To be successful as a plumber, electrician, or joiner, you need to be able to have the skills to take on any project that comes across your desk. As technology moves forward, so do the ambitions of homeowners, and you need to be able to complete the work that is asked of you to the highest possible standard. With this in mind, here are some different common home improvement projects that require their own specialised skills to install them.

Underfloor Heating

Although the idea of underfloor heating has been around since the time of the Romans, it is seen as a luxury in the homes of today. There are a number of different technologies that bring this high-class feature into kitchens and bathrooms, but the most specialised and expensive solution is a wet system that uses water from the boiler system. In many cases, the existing floor will need to be removed to accommodate this, so knowing how to apply this solution to different homes is vital.

Household Electronics

If you work as an electrician, you’ll have likely come across the various gadgets and tech that become popular in the homes of people who want to stay ahead of the curve. The rise of the so-called Internet of Things (IoT) has led to many people wanting to install heating systems and light bulbs that are connected to the internet and can be controlled with smartphone devices. Knowing how to best fit and wire these devices discreetly across a home will set you apart from the competition.

Solar Panelling

Though solar panels have been available on the market for decades, improvements to the technology and an ever-growing trend for renewables has made them popular with homeowners. The popularity of solar panelling was blighted by the reputation of dodgy salesmen throughout the 1990s. Today, there are elegant solutions to fit every type of home, meaning experts who know this tech are well sought after.

Home Security Systems

While this point might still fit in with the aforementioned household electronics, it’s worth taking a moment to consider the changes that have been happening in the world of home protection technology in recent years. Wireless cameras that connect to the IoT are increasingly sought after along with doorbells that have the ability to send live pictures of the owner’s doorstep to their phone. Understanding the various applications of this technology will be vital to the modern contractor.

More often, we are seeing people making improvements to their homes that are designed to increase their value. In response to this, contractors need to be able to implement these various innovations to a high standard. There is no end to the training and expertise that workers have to undergo to be able to meet the changing demands of their clients. Having an awareness of what people are looking for will allow you to maintain your reputation in the long term with your customer base.
