To be honest the times I have used the ball pean I did have a little trouble with the paper tearing at the perimeter of the indents...even when I genlty tap them....

I guess when I use a banjo for the corners I like to roll them with an angle roller and wipe them by hand with a 6" knife. Finish coat I use a corner box.

It sounds to me like your banjo leaks because it is set to leave a lot more mud than needed behind the tape. Try and adjust the banjo so it will tape about 45' per banjo full...
