Price comparison

Anyone get a quote and estimate from competitors so you know what price point you should be looking at? Do you go the same, lower, or higher for your clients?

Does anyone consider this unethical?

Re: Price comparison

If I take the time to bid a job, and get under bid by a competitor; I ask the general contractor for information about the other bids. I figure I have earned that information.

Re: Price comparison

I don't ask about the other guys price . I know most of the guys in my area . I know somewhat what their process and prices are.

Some are good friends ,and great drywallers we keep in touch with warnings of crazy homeowners, and general contractors .

Re: Price comparison

We have a mix of both domestic contractors who carry insurance, pay taxes, and pay competitive wages for labor. Then we have another group in the mix (getting larger all the time) of illegal alien contractors who do not pay taxes, do not carry proper insurance, or even have bank accounts. They operate on a cash only basis. Often aided by check cashing (for profit) kiosks. (even Walmart will now cash checks for a fee to customers with inadequate identification) I only bring this up because I usually try to find out which of the two groups of subcontractors the general contractor is using. The domestic guys are usually pretty close in price. It is good to know what the cheap guys are charging and paying their help. When we hit the critical tipping point of no return, I will know it is time to get out of the trade.

That goes on everywhere. I'm lucky enough to know who those builders are most of the time . It is frustrating to see not just drywallers but other trades cheating while I play by the rules . The rules that cost me ! And not them. But. If one gets hurt or causes 10s of thousands of damage on a job. It goes back to the one that hired those under the table workers .
