Re: Confused Apprentices

Whitey,
Normal once a week? Maybe I should come back to the states if I only have to work 4 days and get to pick my days off. He would have been gone after the second time I don't tolorate no show-no call. I don't care how good you are you don't show up for work it's time to find another employer. Give them a finger and they take your arm.

Re: Confused Apprentices

Give him a no show on the paycheck and see if he gets it ? Really though good guys are hard to come by and you may think his work is worth keeping him when he does show up , but it is for the best interest too you , to let him go otherwise it will come back and bit you in the azz . Who needs a guy that you have to baby sit ? Don't you have enough worries ? It is in my agreement when I hire someone that being late or no shows are a good enough reason to get fired !!! I think with the contractors list of who don't pay we should make a list of guys that bounce from one company to another and who aren't worth hiring ..... It could save us all a lot of grief .. what do you think guys want to add a hire list based on performance and good work ethics ? There is a lot of hard working men out there that show up on time everyday do good work that should not be sitting at home worrying about taking care of their families while some duffus is out there filling there position while screwing off only working to get some extra party money or whatever reason they may have .

Re: Confused Apprentices

Three no-call, no-shows in one week? Unless he hooked up with a super model in a hotel without phone coverage, I'd be inclined to fire away. But if he is worthy, then busthis pay back a buck an hour per occurrence. Make it pay if you decide to keep him. All the azz eatings don't do any good but get in their wallet and they start to pay attention. And see that his check is MIA just as long as he was.

And when I encounter a crew that turns out sub-standard work, I pass that on to several other local DCs so we kinda blacklist them. We also trade info on "do not match" IRS letters, etc. If we were to post such info, we'd get sued eventually.

The drywall community has gotten smaller than ever of late. They dregs will soon run out of fresh fish to fleece.

Re: Confused Apprentices

I was thinking the same thing about coming right out and black listing someone by name would be a lawsuit just waiting to happen , I think that your idea is better Darren which I have in the past have done myself on a few occasions although sometimes I really don't care if the competition hires my throwbacks since it is to my advantage ..... but then again I do respect some of my competition and make any information known to them that will keep things running smoothly for them and out of respect . You know what I mean or getting at ?

Re: Confused Apprentices

Exactly. I share this info with only a handful of DCs, we don't bid against each other, basically work different sides of town. Some of these "unreliable" workers reputations are known even at the supply houses. Drywall is/has become a pretty small world.

Re: Confused Apprentices

no, he's not good at all, and I have to babysit him non stop, he's a 1st year apprentice, in other words, my go-fer boy. He's done. Since then, I've went through 2 more guys.
The only reason I guess I felt it needed to ask you guys, was because he was a friend. Obviously the feeling wasn't mutual.

Never hire friends or relatives is a good policy , unless of course they have a good work record before they come to work for you . Most friends or relatives think in the back of their mind that they can get away with stuff and that you won't say or do anything about it . Most are there just for the free ride.... That goes for working ( doing a job ) for friends or relatives , they think just because they know or are related to you that you should work for free or next to it ..... I never work for relatives unless i do a charity job or get everything in writing and signed so there is no hard feelings.... just good policy

Re: Confused Apprentices

yeah, he's since called me up, not only asking for more money than deserved, but also blamed his no-show on me. I didn't call and wake him up in the am....nice
