New guy from Ontario Canada

Just thought I would introduce myself to everyone before I post anything.

I am a remodeling contractor from Ontario Canada. Most of my jobs are bathrooms and basements. Over the years I found that it was hard to find people to do these smaller jobs, or they would try to "squeeze it in" which never worked out, so I ended up doing all of it in house.

My skills have improved drastically over the years, from time on the job and forums such as this.

First things first, if my qualifications are inappropriate for the forum, please let me know. I don't want to ruffle any feathers.

Anyhow, I am at that stage again, where I want to up my game and skills, so I started buying auto tools. So far I have a 7, 10, 12" boxes (Tapetech), 36" handle and an adjustable handle, 3" angle head and a mudrunner. I just purchased a nail spotter and another pump.

I am now looking at a taper, currently I have been using the BTE super taper and flushers.

Anyhow, if it is ok, I will start a thread with the questions I have about these tools.

Thanks...scott

Re: New guy from Ontario Canada

Thanks for the welcome Carpentaper.

You are correct, I have read the forums for a while now and others as well. I thought it was time to join. Judging by the 24 views and no other posts, I am guessing that because I am not 100% drywall I may not be welcome here.

My thoughts are this, everyone's business model is different. Myself, I think I am ocd and have to make sure everything is as good as I can get it. I am also very hands on, and enjoy it!

I would think that having someone like myself that wants to get better is a good thing. I am far from a hack.

Any ways like I posted in my original post, if my posting does not meet the guidelines, please let me know and I will pack it in. I am not here to ruffle any feathers, just want to better myself.

Geez Scott.

At the end of the day the most important thing is that your customers are satisfied with your work. Ideally, they'd still be satisfied if they were painters or mudders and knew what flaws to look for. If you really want to get good, go work with a local pro for a bit. I walked into my local bank yesterday and saw that all their standup taper joints from a recent remodel flashed (I have no idea who did the work, it just made me smile). But somebody must have been happy enough with it. The only substitute for learning all the tricks through a pro, is suffering for years trying to figure out the tricks one at a time. In any case, don't worry too much about getting community approval on here to be a member of the site-at least not in this thread. If you ask a specific question, and get no responses, you'll know where you stand.

Re: New guy from Ontario Canada

Thanks guys.

John, obviously i wouldn't use them on a little bathroom, but I would pull them out for a basement.

My current job is a whole house, you may remember it from the "other" site. I should have had rock up by now, but I have been laid up for a couple weeks getting IV treatment with antibiotics for a problem with my leg.

IV comes out tomorrow, so full steam ahead!

I do love my tools, and use any excuse (like the whole house job) to buy new ones! Is it overkill for me? Probably, but I will try anything to give the customer the best job I can, and who knows which direction my business will eventually go.

Re: New guy from Ontario Canada

Well with drywall not everyone can do it. A lot of people can make it pass. But to me my standard is higher than the contractor or the homeowners. And with tools u have to do a lot of hand picking behind them. U cant just run in there and slap mud on. But any questions that u have ask away. Everyone here is pretty good about helping

Re: New guy from Ontario Canada

Thanks, I do like my tools though!

Tricounty, I am quite proficient with knives, I have always been curious about auto tools so I figured I would make the leap with the job I am on. I totally understand, that there are still areas to be touched up, or done by hand. Nothing "automatic" about it!

When I get to the drywall stage on the house I am on, I will definately post some pics, and maybe a video walk through as well.
