Question

What would you like to see?

This is a new site and I'm sure there is a lot of room for improvement. Please let me know what you would like to see changed or added to make this site great.

I am always open to suggestions or comments!

Thanks!

Re: What would you like to see?

These forums are usually a bunch of guys sitting around waiting for someone to start a new thread. From time to time, a goofball wanders on to the site, and asks a goofy question, and everybody pounces. a good time is had by all, a couple jokes are cracked, and the hush falls.
Other times, a member is stumped by an application, and others talk about a variety of unrelated topics that start with the same letter as the question, or something...
What's missing, is a forum that's actually headed somewhere. that's not just "moderated", but hosted. Maybe a guest poster. Maybe the head of some organization on one day, a knowledgeable representative of a manufacturer the next. You've got these Banner ADs, there must be some way of improving the content with the revenue.
Maybe: several threads boiled down into a consensus. The questions posed here to start discussions, are decent. but they should'nt stop after a few million hits. Fresh questions designed to draw out the knowledge of the browsers, should be provided daily. The old threads should be gleaned for info, and all good data placed in a separate organized reference, with quotes to the poster, but re-formatted. The forum should go somewhere, not stagnate. I would love to point my employees to the fruit of the heavily edited and updated "handbook"for their questions and betterment. If the forum were producing a reference work, there's always more territory to cover, always new questions to ask.

Re: What would you like to see?

Interesting input savant... thanks!

On PaintTalk.com we have had some reps from major manufacturers join and give product support and guidance to the members. It's been a huge asset and one example of how I'm trying to make these sites a tool for your business and not just a hang out.
We can look into having guest authors come in and write articles or host discussions but I'm not sure about organizing old threads into a resource. It's not a bad idea but it's just something I haven't really thought about. Technically the content of each post is the property of the poster so you have to be careful about how you handle it.

Re: What would you like to see?

When you post something to myfoxny.com or one of our other TV stations, everything you say becomes property of the station. Giving drywalltalk exclusive license to use posts as it sees fit could easily be added to the use agreement. Almost all use agreements ie. ISP, Bank, CCard, et cetera make a point of this. If people don't object to those, why not here? Besides, if you quote the poster, it absovles you of responsiblilty for the validity. I included a model release into my standard terms of contract. I have the right to photograph the homes, families, visitors, etc. and use them any way I see fit. You'd probably want to set the groundwork now though.
I was thinking of it as an organized catalog of information. It doesn't have to be very wordy. What an awesome thing.
You might even do it as a statistical thing. Like a census report.

Re: What would you like to see?

It's probably possible, although it would require a lot of work, to compile data into useful guides. I guess I'm just very used to the forum format so I don't find it hard to search through data and find what I"m looking for.

As far as who owns the words in a post I'm sure I have some "rights" to reprint data that is posted here (even though I don't) ... but honestly I don't want to own their words. Contracting can be very dangerous and the only thing that makes these sites possible is that the site owners are not held liable for the content posted on them but rather the poster is.

Re: What would you like to see?

Would love to see a manufacturer’s forum for us to learn from... If you could work it into offering it to your advertisers as a bonus. I'm on here trying to learn better ways to do what I do... I would love it if they had a new products type thing they could tell us about the new stuff they think we want! LOL Not that I like advertising but I do like new information in a controlled enviroment.

Re: What would you like to see?

That's one of my goals for sure. On PaintTalk.com we have several manufacturer's on the site that provide support and info.
I think it's just going to take a few months first to get enough steam behind us.

Re: What would you like to see?

I'd like to see more drywall want ads (like the one for work in Hartford)

Seems to me that would really pull in the traffic since other sites hardly do that at all.

But i guess for there to be want ads there has to be some work out there.

Not being able to keep workers working is probably the most fundamental failure that an business / industry can exhibit.

The only hold up there is that the manufacturers generally know the least about their products from a tradesman point of view. They know what they produced something for, how it is best used is another story that they have a hard time writing.

The Ames story is a great example, their first invention was the nail spotter because as tradesmen they knew that most tradesmen feel that screw spotting is mundane entry-level, time consuming work. 65 years later, the executives that own the joint don't even know how to use one, much less tell you.

Re: What would you like to see?

i'm joining for general and honest input in the latest tools, trends, and techniques. I generally spend 10's of thousands in new equiptment ,and replacing broken tools annually with all the new gadgets and gimmicks on the market today hard to know if your investing in the right tools for our trade. there seems to be some good sized companies in here that i can relate to. maybe you could start some kind of drywall tool ebay or barter, trade section in here somewhere for my garage full of outdated and in need of repair tools lol.

Re: What would you like to see?

Traffic has been picking up some and this is a pretty normal process for a new site like this. Keep up the suggestions as you have them and I'll keep trying to get more and more people here.

Thanks!

how about a for sale/ wanted section? I know I would rather help out another guy on here, to possibly buy a tool he doesn't like.

Re: What would you like to see?

Can we also close the forum down for non members? All of the current members are great at not letting loose the real tricks/secrets. Or else, come up with a secondary forum that's password protected? I would be willing to contribute monetarily for something like that
