Re: Professional show of hands please

see ,now i'm back to let the mods decide,I'm not a face book or twitter type guy,nor could I be capable of setting up nor running a site like this.I'm left in the dark on this one.mods run the show, their doing a very good job (compared to some other sites I've seen) they don't (mods) suffer from a Napoleon complex, they let us bicker ,fight ,argue ,debate, tease, and HELP each other with out banning u for something trivial, they must be construction workers too ,I guess
Some guest could come on this site and wouldn't even know what were talk-in about, with all this talk of bazooka's ,spray GUNS ,knifes ,blades and commie Canada........they might think were talking about a terrorist organization
But ,true pro's will be happy to find this site

This is the way we've been running ContractorTalk.com for the past 7 years now and while it has it's flaws it's the best system.
You are doing a great job nathan
I am sure that most of the guy's and gals signed up here don't always log on to view the sight. Just want to check whats happening before they go out the door in the morning. I am guilty of it and I am sure of the 47 guests there are more.

I got thinking now..........oh oh !!!!! think what mudstar is trying to say is,people can find the site, read the board, see what threads there are,but not read the post unless your a member,Thats how some other sites work ,so pro's will go ' hey their talking my talk and join ,DIY will go what to hell these threads about?????and not join
plus some sites give out prizes to their members hint ,hint

Im not really clear on what it matters if DIYers can view everything as a guest. Are people worried that they will take the advice given here and skip on hiring a pro? If a person is going to read this forum and not hire me as a result I say go for it. When things dont work out I'll come in and charge double to fix it all.

you hit the nail on the head, but it's not just DIY ,it's builders and general contractors that may want to buy the tools and get their in house flunkies ($10hr) to do the work.Or some talk and brag like taping and hanging easy money.....so drop your price, were supplying a how to do it book.
but on the other hand, taping is like singing, either you can sing or you can't....take's talent
plus old day's you use to half to apprentice under someone, not no more it seems

Bottom line, this isn't a how-to drywall site. This is a place for pros to come and talk. I highly doubt a DIY homeowner is going to gain a lot of basic how-to knowledge from what they read on this site. It's just a different level of conversation.

That is so true there are many book smart people out there doesn't mean when it comes down to on hands work they can do it.... all the knowledge of just knowing something means that one is capable of the actual work....

The avg Joe could have a pro come and SHOW them how to do it and it wouldnt do them much good. "That looks so easy" How many times have we heard that? I dont believe a non pro would benefit much from this site or even watching me work for a day. Just too many tiny things that make a taper a professional. (or even competent IMO)

If this is not a how to site what are we all talking about drywall then.

What they read is not understandable or you don't understand or is this a level of understanding what is it ?

whats the name of the site?

Re: Professional show of hands please

So, you don't know how to hang drywall Mudstar? Is that why you join this site ... to learn how? I doubt it. I bet you came here to get business tips, pro tips (very different than how to) and hang out with other pros right?

Re: Professional show of hands please

A simple question with no answers is all I get from it but when it comes to drywall it self we all have an answer it seems to me

The site name says it all, I figured it out.

Re: Professional show of hands please

Like I thought and point over looked.

I'd say I don't need the answer to what I asked in the beginning as I got my answer on something else.

Lock the thread Nathan there no point in the question anymore.

Re: Professional show of hands please

here is my point of view of this forum
i have been hand taping for over 40 years paid by the hour
now a days they want us to tape 9000 feet a week and also if they have a newbie taper they want us to fix behind their S****.

if i am to tape 9000 feet by hand a week i may as well go piece work and to go piece work doing custum houses you may as well get automatic tools. when i was by the hour the beads were on now piece work they use paper face and we have to put them on.
so the reason i come to this site is not to learn what the 1 st and 2nd and 3rd coat nor how to sand all i want to know is which tool i need and wich are best i just bought already.
as anyone else i was looking for tools as lower price as possible and by reading this forum i stayed away from goldblatt..
i am sure i am not the only one in my situation of course i signed in at the very beginning cause it s a drywall and drywall finisher forum.
with over 40 years experience i also learnt a few tricks of the trade exemple instead of putting mud on the external 90 corner i dint put on the wall and put the bead and wipe it
i roll the mud on the bead with a roller and then put it on the wall and wipe it this way i dont have to climb to put mud on the wall and loses less time..
i think this is a good forum like anywhere else many tapers do the same thing differently to come to a good product their own way..

Yep, most people don't realize it takes years of practice to become a pro. The concept of taping is simplistic, slap on mud & smooth it out. Yet the actual work itself is so much more. It takes a long time to develop the "touch" & "feel". Some people are never able to obtain it. If I'm taping new construction, you almost could get away with running a damp sponge over the mud, it's almost that finished ready

I've had friends who said the same thing, "that looks simple, I bet I could do that". Then they call me over to fix what looks like small mountains of mud that take days to sand down
